Apply for a seasonal number plate
You can use seasonal number plates for vehicles that you only intend to use at certain times of the year, such as motorbikes, convertibles or motorhomes. This saves you the hassle of having to register and deregister the vehicle frequently.
When registering the vehicle in your name, you specify, on a one-off basis, the period during which you intend to use the vehicle. This can range from two to eleven months per year. Outside this period, you must not drive the vehicle on public roads and must park it off public roads and in public spaces, on private property such as in a garage.
Note: The period of use is indicated on the right-hand edge of the number plateias a fraction. For example, ‘05/11’ means that you may use the vehicle from May to November.
Insurance cover and the obligation to pay premiums are suspended during the period outsiderthe period of validity.

The registration authority is,
- for a city district: the city council
- for a rural district: the district administration
Details
Prerequisite
- You have valid third-party motor insurance for your vehicle.
- You have a private parking space for your vehicle outside of operating hours.
- You must not have any outstanding fees or charges from previous registration procedures. If you have outstanding payments of more than EUR 30.00, theregistration authority mayrefuse to register your vehicle until you have settled these. If the amount is more than EUR 10.00,theregistration authoritymaydecide whether or not to register the vehicle anyway.
- You must not have any outstanding motor vehicle tax debts of EUR 5.00 or more. Late payment penalties, interest and surcharges are alsotaken into account when calculating the amount.
- If you wish someone to act on your behalf when registering your vehicle, you must provide that person with a written power of attorney. This must also include a declaration of consent stating that the registration authority may inform the authorised person of any outstanding fees and expenses. Your representative must present the power of attorney and show proof of identity.
Procedure
When applying in person:
If you register your vehicle with your local registration authority for a specific period, you will immediately be issued with a number plate combination indicating the seasonal period.
With this allocation:
- you can have the number plates made
- have the registration authority affix the stickers to the number plates
- secure the number plates firmly in the designated positions on the vehicle
When applying online:
You can apply for a seasonal number plate via the i-Kfz portal. To do this, you will need to enter an electronic insurance number (eVB) along with the desired period of use.
The allocation of a seasonal number plate to your vehicle will be:
- entered directly into the Central Vehicle Register
- reported to your insurance company
- sent to you as a notification by email or via download
You can then
- have the number plates made
- attach the registration authority’s stickers to the number plates
- securely attach the number plates to the designated positions on the vehicle

Miscellaneous
If you wish to change the season period, you will need a new insurance certificate and new number plates for the vehicle. You will not be issued with a different combination of letters or numbers. Exception: the combination following the registration number is already six digits long.
